The PLAY: F5 Total Under 4.0 (100) Connelly Early (LHP), Michael Wacha (RHP) Must Start
The first two games of this Royals-Red Sox series have gotten off to a slow start, and we expect that to be the case again on Wednesday. Monday's game didn't see its first run until the sixth inning, while Tuesday's contest was 3-1 heading into the ninth inning before Boston produced some late insurance runs. Conditions should be favorable for pitchers at Kauffman Stadium this evening and we're looking at the first five under in this starting pitcher matchup between Boston's Connelly Early and Kansas City's Michael Wacha. Early has pitched very well on the road this season, going 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP through his first five starts away from Fenway. Early will have the element of unfamiliarity on his side as no one from the Royals' lineup has ever faced the 24-year-old lefty before. Over his last two starts, Early has allowed a total of two runs (both solo home runs) on nine hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts in 12.0 innings. On the flip side, Wacha has performed very well at home this season. The veteran righty is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP in four home starts. Over his last two starts, Wacha has allowed a total of three runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 13.0 innings. Red Sox relievers Justin Slaten and Garrett Whitlock have each pitched on back-to-back nights and both are presumably unavailable for tonight's contest. Let's take the bullpens out of this equation and back another slow start between Boston and Kansas City with a look at the first five under.
